televisions and toasters may become the next pathway into homes
for high-speed Internet access, federal officials said Wednesday.

controversial Total Information Awareness program. Seeking to
catch terrorists before they strike, the research program aims

the Information Awareness Office, which operates under the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency, commonly known as DARPA.

was disinclined to accept a senior position in the new Homeland
Security Department and planned to retire after three decades

Congress is proposing to dramatically slash 2003 funding for
the Electronic Government Act passed amid much fanfare last
November. President Bush signed the bill in December, requesting
E-Gov funding of $45 million this year and ramping up to $150
million by 2006. Instead, Congress plans to gut the funding
by almost 90 percent to only $5 million.

establishes a new Office of E-government within the White House's

A three-day meeting that brought together Asian governments,
organizations, companies and non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) ended with the approval of a declaration that, among
other things, calls for encouraging the development of open-source
software. A draft of the declaration had called for open source
to be "supported" but was changed after objections from the
U.S. government delegation.
